Today, December 19th, is Edith Piaf's birthday. It was a song of hers, "Non, Je Ne Regrette Rien," that I requested at La Mere Catherine on the evening of my own birthday. As I said to the singer, France Fannell, afterward, it's a perfect song for a birthday because it's not something I achieved but an ideal I always keep in mind. (That being the case, she proceeded to sing to me, before the entire restaurant, "Joyeux Anniversaire.") Thank you, Edith Piaf and France Fannell.
